Goldendoodles were first developed in the 1990s in North America and Australia after the successful breeding of the Labradoodle and Cockapoo mixes. The main goal was to achieve a slightly larger “doodle” that will shed less and produce less dander, making them better tolerated by allergy sufferers than other breeds.

Since this breed is still relatively “new,” it is quite common for available puppies to be first-generation (F1) crosses between a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle. The typical mature Goldendoodles can weight between 50 to 75 lbs.

When an F1 Goldendoodles are crossed with Standard Poodles, the generation is classified as F1b. F1b Goldendoodles are likely to have a fuller, curlier coat with a high chance of being non-shedding.

If an F1 Goldendoodle is bred with another F1, the puppies will be classified as F2s.

The multigeneration Goldendoodle is the mix of two Goldendoodle parents that are at least second-generation crosses.

Now, multigeneration puppies are standard with breeders who have moved on to higher generations, breeding into the 4th generation. The multigeneration Goldendoodles are gaining popularity as more breeders are breeding later generations. However, early-generation Goldendoodles (F1s or F1bs) remain popular with many owners and breeders.

Most wavy and curly multigeneration puppies do not shed, but flat-coated Goldendoodles will more likely shed a little. The increased success of non-shedding coats in the F1bs and multigeneration is the primary reason for the growing popularity of Goldendoodles’ later generations.

When talking about the size of a Goldendoodle, this again varies across the breed. Depending on the breed of its parents, your Goldendoodle can be miniature, medium, or standard in size.

Size and Weight of a Miniature Goldendoodle

The miniature Goldendoodle is one of the most sought after breeds. Loved for its hypoallergenic fur but also the fact it is tiny in size. This variation of the Goldendoodle is the result of a Golden Retriever and either a ‘toy’ or ‘miniature’ Poodle. 

When fully grown, a miniature Goldendoodle will measure 35 – 43 cm or 14 – 17 inches high (at the wither).

In terms of weight, miniature Goldendoodles are no heavier than 16 kg. When fully grown, they will weigh between 12 – 16 kg or 26 – 35 lbs.

The miniature Goldendoodles make great lap dogs for small home or apartment owners. They are a popular pet choice for families with children.

Size and Weight of a Medium Goldendoodle

Medium Goldendoodles are the result of breeding a medium-sized Poodle and a Golden Retriever. The majority of this breed, when fully grown, will measure 43 – 51 cm or 17 – 20 inches tall (measured at the wither). 

Very true to its name, this is a medium-sized dog that can range from 16 – 23 kg or 36 – 50 lbs. 

This variation of the Goldendoodle can still be the perfect lap dog and a great companion for a morning walk or a game of throw and catch.

Size and Weight of a Standard Goldendoodle

If your Goldendoodle’s parents were a standard size Poodle, then the result will be a larger variation of Goldendoodle. 

The size of a Standard Goldendoodle can be anywhere from 53 – 63 cm or 21 – 25 inches tall.

The weight of a Standard Goldendoodle can vary from 23 – 35 kg or 50 – 75 lbs.

Standard Goldendoodles are great companion dogs for those who enjoy the comfort and security of a larger dog. You will need to have a home with large fenced yards for your doodle to be active.
