6 Things to Be Aware of Before Purchasing a Labradoodle

  • Labradoodles Need Regular Grooming

No matter what your Labradoodle looks like, he or she will need regular grooming. The specifics depend on your Labradoodle’s hair type. Dogs with long coats will need regular brushing. This helps prevent matting.

On the other hand, some Labradoodles have a silkier, more fleece like coat. This type of coat will need to be brushed every day or every other day.

All Labradoodles will need to visit the groomer every two to three months. Your dog will need at least a nail trim, a bath and a haircut. The exact hair length will be specific to your dog’s needs and hair style.

Some owners prefer a buzz-cut. This is a uniform cut where about one inch of hair is left. While fluffiness is lost, this is an easy style to maintain.

The main thing to be aware of is that Labradoodles need regular grooming in order to be comfortable.

  • Labradoodles Need Time and Attention

Poodles and Labrador retrievers are both highly intelligent dogs. While crossbreeding doesn’t always lead to dependable outcomes, you can safely assume your Labradoodle will be pretty smart as well. A smart dog can be a delight, but it can also be a surprise, especially for first-time Labradoodle owners.

A smart dog will get bored easily. And a bored dog can express his frustrations by barking, chewing up shoes and in other destructive ways. There are a few effective ways to counteract this tendency:

  • Make sure your dog has plenty of toys. This includes toys such as squeaky toys, stuffed animals and ropes which can be played with at will. Toys can also be edible. Labradoodles will happily spend time chewing on larger treats such as rawhide and beefhide. (You’ll also want smaller snacks for training and reward purposes.)
  • Help your dog get plenty of exercise. You’ll want to walk your dog twice a day for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time. You can also play fetch with your dog. Some Labradoodles even enjoy swimming.

You should be aware that Labradoodles are active animals who need regular exercise, even if it’s not always convenient for you.

The Most Important Thing to Know Before Purchasing a Labradoodle

They’re great dogs! For homes which are willing and able to take in a Labradoodle, they often make wonderful additions to the family. Just be sure you’re ready for the time and energy commitment. But if you are, your Labrador will be a happy, loyal companion.
