Humans and dogs communicate in different ways. What makes sense to you doesn’t necessarily make sense to your dog. Humans unknowingly annoy or upset their dog with seemingly harmless behaviors. When handling your Labradoodle, it’s important to know which behaviors they don’t tolerate well. Here are some things you should never do to your Labradoodle.
1. Yell at Them
When training your dog, things can get frustrating. Maybe your Labradoodle isn’t picking up on things or gets distracted easily. When your dog does something wrong, don’t berate or punish them. There’s a good chance that they didn’t think their behavior was wrong. Yelling is a good way to make your dog fear you. Scared dogs will change their behavior to avoid punishment, which will disrupt your training plan.
Instead, stay happy and positive during training. Your dog reacts to positive reinforcement much better than negative reinforcement. If you find yourself getting frustrated or angry at your dog, take a break and come back to it later. You’re better off interrupting bad behavior with a noisemaker or a firm command. Do this with a calm demeanor because Labradoodles can pick up on your emotions.
2. Rub Their Nose in Messes
A common misconception when it comes to potty training is to rub your dog’s nose in their excrement when they have an accident. The rationale behind this is that they will associate using the bathroom with scolding. However, this doesn’t do anything but make your Labradoodle scared to potty around you. This fear may cause them to poop and pee in hiding. The reason this doesn’t work is because dogs don’t have the memory and capacity to make a connection between a past accident and your present anger.
The only way to stop your dog from having accidents in the house is to catch them in the act and give them a command. That’s why it’s important to have a close eye on them during housetraining. If your dog has an accident inside, clean it up well enough that they cannot smell their spot. Then, wait until they use the bathroom outside and praise them.
3. Leave Them Alone
Labradoodles can be independent, but they are mostly companion dogs. They need to spend a lot of time with their people. Leaving a dog outside all day can make them feel neglected. Even if you aren’t actively playing with them, spending time near you will make them happier.
If you know you aren’t going to be home a lot, consider not buying or adopting a Labradoodle. They cannot go all day without interacting with someone. They also need an owner that has the time to play with them or give them exercise. Also, if they get bored, they can be destructive. If you can’t find the time to entertain them, don’t be surprised when they have dug a giant hole in your flower garden. This dog doesn’t typically cause problems for people with allergies and they don’t shed a lot, so there is no reason why they can’t spend time inside.
