Chances are, you’re familiar with the Standard Labradoodle. There’s a different breed called the Australian Labradoodle that have some unique qualities. These dogs take more work and expertise to breed, making them more rare than the Labradoodle. The two breeds are fairly similar, but there are still some important differences to note.
Breeding
There’s more to this breed than just Labradors and Poodles. This breed is a Labradoodle with infusions of other breeds. These can include dogs like Curly Coat Retriever, English Cocker Spaniels, American Cocker Spaniels, and occasionally Irish Water Spaniels. Breeders believe that the inclusion of these breeds makes the coats softer, gives them a better temperament, and a more uniform size.
If you’re looking to buy an Australian Labradoodle, you’ll want to make sure your breeder is an expert. Look for someone who is part of an official breeding organization. The Australian Labradoodle is carefully crafted when bred correctly, so you’ll want to make sure you get what you’re looking for.
General Appearance
At first glance, it’s pretty difficult to tell the difference between a standard Labradoodle and an Australian Labradoodle. The Australian Labradoodle has infusions of different breeds to improve upon the coat type. Australian Labradoodles are around 22-24 inches tall. The females are around 45-60 pounds and males are approximately 55-75 pounds. In comparison, Labradoodles are 21-24 inches tall and on average weigh 50-65 pounds. Miniature Australian Labradoodles are about five inches shorter on average and weigh 10-15 pounds less than the standard size. This is comparable to the size difference between the Standard Labradoodle and the Medium Labradoodle.
Coat
The Australian Labradoodle coat is similar to the Labradoodle coat because it is wavy or curly. Many believe that the Australian Labradoodle coat sheds less than the Labradoodle because it is has other breeds in the bloodline. As with any Labradoodle, it’s possible to encounter many different fur types in the Australian Labradoodle. The two types that are usually found are fleece and wool. The fleece coat is medium length and silky. This fur is light, silky, and does not have a tight curl. Curl type can vary from a loose curl to a slight wave. The wool coat is denser than the fleece coat, like you would see in sheep’s wool. These curls are tighter than the fleece coat. It can get tangled so owners usually keep it shorter so it requires more grooming.
Australian Labradoodles, like Standard Labradoodles, come in a variety of colors. They can be apricot, red, cafe, blue, silver, parchment, chocolate and other mixes and blends of these colors. The main difference between the Labradoodle and the Australian Labradoodle’s coat is that the Australian Labradoodle’s coat tends to be softer and shed less.
